It has been said that doing a good deed can trigger the release of hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, which can contribute to feelings of well-being and pleasure. Not only that, but it can improve connections and build relationships. Most times, we remember the kindness of strangers years after we encounter them. Kindness is contagious, and it feels damn good to be on either side of it. Here are three simple ways that you can spread kindness and make someone’s day.

Write a positive review for a local restaurant or shop you frequent or recently went to.

It takes an extreme amount of courage and passion to create a business from the ground up. Small businesses rely on people to not only survive, but to thrive. I don’t know about you, but it’s rare to go to new places these days without looking at reviews first. If you had a positive experience at a local restaurant or shop, take one minute out of your day to share this experience and lift up the people behind this small shop. I can guarantee that there will be a smiling face on the other end who appreciates you!

Send a friend or loved one a personalized “thinking of you” message.

This doesn’t have to be anything grand, but the smallest “I’m thinking of you” message can go a long way. It could be that you came across a new song/podcast that you know your friend would love, or you caught a glimpse of a smell that reminded you of your mom’s famous double chocolate brownies. Or even a simple, “thinking of you, hope you’re having a lovely day.” We as humans love to hear that we are being thought of and that someone took time out of their day to let us know. These quick messages can compound and build up a relationship; never pass up an opportunity to let someone you love know that they’re on your mind.

Give a compliment.

How many times a day do we think, “oh, I love that girl’s style,” or “that color really brings out that person's eyes.” Did you receive excellent service at lunch? Get above and beyond help or recommendations from the book store clerk? Tell them! People love to hear it. If you are thinking it, and it’s a positive thought about someone, make an effort to say it out loud. I promise you that you won’t regret it.

“Be the change you want to see in the world.”

- Mahatma Gandhi
